Waste not, want not

We’re in the process of delivering our biggest project to date – our brand-new Day Surgeries Unit (DSU) at Castle Hill Hospital, working in partnership with the Hull University Teaching NHS Trust

As a climate positive workforce on a journey to becoming operation net-zero, educating and empowering our team of brilliant people every step of the way, we’re showcasing what a conscious construction company looks like, thinking progressively to make a positive difference.

Our ambition is to be at the forefront of delivering highly sustainable projects that deliver value. Our Helix CMS waste management programme is a leading sustainability initiative. The goal is to divert between 99-100% of site waste from landfill. We’re pleased to announce that in Q4 of 2022, we achieved this goal, diverting 100% of waste on our DSU project, from landfill in October, November and December.

From plasterboard to plastic, all waste was successfully recycled, reused and managed within Yorkshire. With our efforts further compounded by the need to deliver high functioning and safe spaces, we’re incredibly aware we’ll always leave a footprint. However, we’re driven by an unwavering passion and determination to make this impact as small and as green as possible.

SUSTAINABILITY STATS

We recycled 100% of 6,360kg of general waste including cardboard, plastic and energy from waste (RDF).

  • 12,840kg of plasterboard was 100% recovered through compost and soil conditioner

  • 2,980kg of metal was 100% recovered for recycling, reuse and or remanufacturing

  • 4,000kg of wood was 100% recovered through biomass

Even our waste signage is made from waste!

Our biggest challenge to date has been measuring our eco-social impact and value, implementing KPIs to understand our initiatives, and the influence and improvements we are making along the way.

To understand the end-to-end recycling activity, our waste management programme reporting is a fully transparent process. Weekly data helps us understand our activity and identifies opportunities for continuous improvement.

Helix CMS was recently awarded a place on Pagabo’s £1bn National Framework for Medium Works 23. Applicants that score highest on track record, social value and quality gain a place on the framework, so to be successful is an incredible achievement and a testament to our team.

Aligning with our company values, the Pagabo framework encourages modern, progressive and forward-thinking ways of working and like Helix CMS, driving real value and social impact is at the heart of what Pagabo do.

Having access to Pagabo’s unique social value calculator Loop will enable us to make measurable steps, and support us on our journey to becoming operation net-zero.

Beth Bellingham, Business Development Manager at Helix CMS, added: Measuring our impact is the key to understanding our initiatives and the improvements we are making.”

With this progressive software, we will be able to calculate the social, economic and environmental impact and value of the projects that we deliver for the Trust and beyond.
