The brief

Fit out of a modular building, designed, and developed to be two new general wards. The requirements changed mid-project as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ward uses were updated for them to become a specific respiratory ward and general COVID-19 ward.

The response

The project started as fit out of the modular building. This included:

Construction of new stud partition walls and suspended ceilings to create the wards and rooms

A full mechanical and electrical installation was carried out

Sourcing and completion of floor finishes

A suite of hospital furniture, all manufactured by Helix CMS’ manufacturing partner Nexus Solutions

As the requirements changed part way through the build to update the wards to COVID-19 specific wards,

additional specialist requirements were added to the project. This included:

The design and construction of a double lift structure including lift pits

The design and construction of a two-storey plant room which accommodated the district main provided heating (steam plant), medical gases, air handling unit

Further redesign of the building’s air handling system was required to accommodate the respiratory ward

The highlight

Helix CMS delivered the COVID-19 wards and felt immensely proud of being able to support the NHS. The staff at Hull Royal Infirmary were extremely grateful, as were the Trust and playing a part in helping the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic was an honour.

Thank you from myself and the organisation for the exceptional work delivered by all the teams in creating the new COVID-19 cubicles in Ward 37 and Ward 38. The hard work dedication by yourselves, the team and the sub-contractors to complete all the work in the timescale and quality is a fantastic credit to everyone involved. These facilities will make a massive difference on how the trust can safely manage COVID-19 Positive patients during the pandemic. It makes me very proud to be involved and to work with such dedicated people.”
