Pharmacy Stores, Hull Royal Infirmary

Location: Hull Royal Infirmary, Hull, East Yorkshire

Client: Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Value: £700k

Timeframe: 18 Weeks

The brief

To procure, design and fit out a modular building.

The challenge

Part way through the design and build project the client requested the addition of a clinical trials suite, to include a walk-in chiller. This was designed by the Helix CMS team and fitted into the new building.

The highlight

Helix CMS delivered the COVID-19 wards and felt immensely proud of being able to support the NHS. The staff at Hull Royal Infirmary were extremely grateful, as were the Trust and playing a part in helping the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic was an honour.

The response

Due to the pandemic, the availability of modular buildings was beyond the timescales of the project and the client asked for an alternative solution. Helix CMS went through the process of stakeholder engagement, design specifications and proposed the construction of a portal frame building. Helix CMS went through the planning application process and completed the design including building services to Part L2. Part L2 requires new build designs to have renewable energy sources. Therefore Helix CMS built air source heat pumps into the design.

This included:

Groundworks and erection of the steel structure

Cladding and roofing

External windows and doors

Full mechanical, electrical, and renewable installation

Full internal fit out – including plastering, floors, ceiling, hygiene solutions and furniture
