Ward 39, Hull Royal Infirmary

Location: Hull Royal Infirmary, Hull, East Yorkshire

Client: Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Value: £3.4m

Timeframe: 22 weeks

The brief

A design and build project to strip out an existing 900m2 office building, to transform the space into a 20-bed ward with 3 wards, 4 individual rooms and a discharge lounge.

The response

Helix CMS worked in close partnership with the client to ensure the successful delivery of Ward 39, future-proofing the project using state of the art technology and an agile approach.

Initially the client brief was to provide a general ward but due to increasing pressures placed on the NHS, requirements changed, instead delivering a cardiac ward. All design requirements had to be reviewed and updated to reflect the regulations and requirements.

When the scope, design and use changed, we responded quickly, using BIM technology to digitally re-design all plans.

The refurbishment of Ward 39 took place in a live hospital environment, above an existing ward in-use, adjoined to a live control room and access was on a blue ambulance route. Therefore, Helix took great care and attention to ensure the ward was sealed to any connecting areas, and a new access gantry was created.

“To be seen by the correct specialist team who can treat conditions immediately and have a shorter stay in the hospital. This new ward will ensure all patients have a much better experience during their time with us and will get home much faster.”
