Meet Lucy
We take pride in our apprenticeship scheme, employing young, local talent and supporting them through their education – with the goal to promote from within.
Meet Lucy, who started her apprenticeship in October 2020 and has gone from strength to strength.
Lucy’s natural curiosity led her to explore multiple areas of the business – commercial, accounting, finance, account management, sales and marketing. Her natural skill to see a company holistically was clear – something which is rare, particularly at a young age.
Neil Sewell, CEO recalls: “Lucy’s enthusiasm and wanting to get stuck in with her role – she was the standout candidate.”
Life in Accounting as an apprentice...
Lucy showed dedication and quickly got involved working in partnership with the accounts office manager, looking after invoices, communicating with clients and managing cash flow. Arriving at the office day-in-day-out with a can-do attitude and an enthusiasm for learning new things. Her positivity is infectious, and she is a valued member of the team.
Entering the construction industry as a young woman, Lucy has a progressive mindset and shows initiative beyond operational tasks in her work.
Joe Fletcher, senior site manager said: “Lucy gets stuck in; on site she works with the lads to get them to complete orders and she is brilliant at getting them on board.”
An aptitude for strategic thinking...
At the end of 2021 Lucy started a new project to develop and implement a process for the purchase of site materials. Working closely with senior site managers, Lucy established the most effective way to manage budgets, raise PO’s and allocate costs to projects.
Lucy’s process has been rolled out on all Helix projects and her work has had a huge impact on the ability to complete project reporting, understanding and assessing project profitability.
Due to Lucys amazing progression and clear aptitude for commercial aspects of the business, Ross, Commercial Director at helix CMS offered Lucy a position to sit on the companies Supply Chain and Commercial Strategy Group. Lucy took on the role with vitality and most recently delivered a large piece of work implementing the Helix Customer Database, which will add huge value to the business.
Lucy hopes to continue her direct involvement with client projects whilst focusing on building a core foundation through implementation of new processes, structures and software to enable a bright future for Helix’s commercial team.
“I’ve worked directly with the NHS Trust to deliver projects, working behind the scenes and on site too – which has been a great learning experience.” - Lucy.
